RIP William Safire
The man who coined the phrase "nattering nabobs of negativism" is no more.
Though as a conservative, he was not a member of the New York Times' tribe, they understood him better than most, and nail the essence of the man in the final two graphs.

ACLU Seeks to tear down VFW War Memorial Cross

At issue is a small cross originally erected on Sunrise Rock in 1934 by the Veterans of Foreign Wars in memory of the dead of all wars. The cross is located in California’s Mojave Desert, in a remote area where the only visible signs of human activity are off-road vehicles and trail hikers. The ACLU succeeded in its anti-cross agenda by obtaining a ruling in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals holding that the cross violated the so-called separation of church and state. However, the U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case, Ken Salazar v. Frank Buono.

Freedom
On this day in 1945, Allied forces liberated some 350 American soldiers from a concentration camp at Berga an der Elster.
Berga an der Elster was a slave labor camp where 350 U.S. soldiers were beaten, starved, and forced to work in tunnels for the German government. The soldiers were singled out for "looking like Jews" or "sounding like Jews," or dubbed as undesirables, according to survivors. More than 100 soldiers perished at the camp or on a forced death march.
It was on this day six decades ago, April 23, 1945, when most of the slave labor camp soldiers were liberated by advancing U.S. troops. The emaciated soldiers, many weighing just 80 pounds, had been forced by Nazi commanders to march more than 150 miles before their rescue.
Read the whole thing, and remember.
To this day I can't speak to a German without the Holocaust in the back of my mind.

The VFW erected an 8 foot cross to memorialize our war dead in the Mojave national reserve, back in 1934.
Now that our WWI veterans are no longer around to defend their memory, the ACLU has filed suit to erase that monument.

RIP Tanta
Traveling tonight (leaving my beloved home state of Hawai'i nei) and heading back to Florida, but I just noticed, via Justin Fox, that the wonderful Doris Dungey, Tanta, of Calculated risk, has passed away, at the age of 47.

In Memoriam: Tim Russert
I am shocked and saddened to learn of the death of NBC's Tim Russert from a sudden heart attack.
He was a real pro, and a class act. I will miss him very much.
Rest in peace, and thank you for your years of journalism.
UPDATE: There's a Jossip story about Russert that goes like this: Russert and David Gregory were out dining in a Washington DC eatery one day when the waitress got their order wrong. Gregory proceeded to heap abuse upon her. Russert, according to Jossip's witness, clenched his teeth and warned Gregory "never behave like that in front of me again."
UPDATE II: Remember the question about illegal immigrants and drivers licenses? Turns out the Hildebeests are still pissed at him.
UPDATE III: Andrea Mitchell's moving on-air tribute.
