Intellectual Honesty in Electric Loveladyland
Steve Lovelady, editor of the prestigious Columbia Journalism Review, loves to dish it out. For instance, when Mark Yost, the editorial page director of the Saint Paul Pioneer Press published an article criticizing the performance of the American media in covering the Iraq War, Lovelady accused him, quite literally, of "turning on his colleagues," and encouraged a baying digital lynch-mob of pitchfork-wielding scribes to string Yost up from the rafters of Romanesko.

(Apparently, in Electric Loveladyland, it's more important to remain true to your most inept and lazy colleagues than it is to remain loyal to the truth and to the craft of the journalism profession and to the American people who rely on you for accurate and balanced reporting. I guess that's what happens when you spend too much time in the northeast media echo chamber. But I digress.)

Jeff Jarvis thought Yost's criticism was fair, though, and invited both Yost and Lovelady to debate the matter on Jarvis's site, Buzzmachine. Lovelady refused - as is his right. But Lovelady refused in the haughtiest and most dismissive manner possible, in a remarkable and public exchange with Jarvis.

But Lovelady also refused to address a single one of Yost's points on a factual basis. Instead, Lovelady stooped to a series of ad hominem smears, incuding calling Yost "a right-wing shill who
belittled and betrayed the hundreds of reporters who go into harm's
way every day to tell us what the hell is really going on."

Again, from Mr. Lovelady, no thought is given to the betrayal of the tens of thousands of American and allied servicemen and women whom the media routinely fail because of their own ignorance and sloppiness, but that is perhaps beside the immediate point at hand: Lovelady's invective does not stop with his personal salvos at Yost. Rather, Lovelady throws a petulant fit, and directly calls Jarvis "an intellectually dishonest schmuck."

I'm glad he did. Frankly, I'm glad he used that precise term, "intellectually dishonest." Because I'd like to examine some things Lovelady has written about me in precisely that light.

Fast forward to September, 2005. The scene is the Press Think discussion board, moderated, I gather, by Jay Rosen. Lovelady makes an appearance on this thread, and makes reference to this Leonard Pitts Miami Herald column from September 9th of this year:
Leonard Pitts had a wonderful piece in the Miami Herald on how FEMA showed up at his doorstep with water, food and medical supplies within 24 hours after Hurricane Andrew blew half his house away in 1992.
So much for the 72-to-96-hours trope.

Another poster counters, arguing (incorrectly) that I "blew the guy away." (I never intended to blow away Pitt. I was countering David Brock, not Pitt. It was Brock who misused Pitts article to prove something it did not.)

But this bastion of intellectual honesty, Steve Lovelady, characterizes my piece thusly:

Yeah, I read Jason van Steenwyk's attempt to tell Leonard Pitts that what happened to Leonard Pitts didn't happen to Leonard Pitts.
It's not very convincing. But then that's always a hard case to make -- "I know more about what happened to you than you know about what happened to you."
It was a nice try, though.

Now, I will just have to leave up to the reader to decide for himself or herself whether anything I wrote about Pitt could possibly be construed as an "attempt to tell Leonard Pitts that what happened to Leonard Pitts didn't happen to Leonard Pitts" -- at least by an intellectually honest reader.

Here: I'll make it easy. Here is a link to the relevant Countercolumn post.

And here, cut-and-pasted, is the entire textual reference to Leonard Pitt's column:

Jason Van Steenwyk: By way of rebuttal to my assertion that the federal response to Katrina was faster and more voluminous than the federal response to Andrew and any other storm I knew of, Brock musters the anecdotal evidence of a single column by Leonard Pitts, a Miami Herald columnist who's home was damaged by Andrew.

Pitts recalls that there was a FEMA truck with water on it the day after Andrew came through.

All well and good. But Pitts is a Miami Herald columnist. What are the chances he lives in Homestead, where the devastation was really great, and which was all but cut off from ground transportation for days after the storm? Not good.

See, you could get trucks down to Miami the day after the storm. It was logistically possible to do so. It was not logistically possible to get trucks to the hardest hit areas of Homestead, unless they happened to be within throwing distance of one of the exits on the Turnpike. But I-95 does not extend further than Miami. And even with all the challenges, the approaches to Homestead did not rely on a system of bridges and causeways that had been removed from the surface of the earth.

So I'll see Pitt's recollection, and I'll raise him the recollection of actual Homestead residents who live and still live on 300th street (Just south of Avocado, in Homestead) who tell me they saw no evidence of a Federal presence for more than a week. They were completely cut off. "The only thing we saw for two weeks was a church bus." I think eventually a Guardsman came by and asked if they had any dead...

[passages strictly referring to Katrina and New Orleans, rather than Pitts, Miami, Homestead, and Andrew omitted here]

Now, Brock, are you going to argue that the federal response to Andrew compared favorably? You're gonna have to do better than the anecdotal evidence of someone who was probably well north of the most critical area. Hell, he probably lived near one of the STAGING areas for supporting Homestead.

Now, here's a challenge for you, Mr. Lovelady. If you are an intellectually honest man, please point out precisely where it is that I argued that what happened to Mr. Pitts didn't happen to Mr. Pitts. Please show me where I cast the least bit of doubt on his version of events. Because frankly, I don't see it.

No, it's not there. Rather, Mr. Lovelady has flat-out misrepresented my writing. And since you he's the editor of an esteemed professional journal at one of the most prestigious (and least cost-efficient) colleges in the land, I'll have to give his intellect and reading comprehension skills the benefit of the doubt - however grudgingly. Therefore, I must believe his distortion and misrepresentation of my writing was deliberate.

But Lovelady doesn't stop there. But aside from lying about the content of my column, does he address a single one of the substantive points I raised?

No. No more than he bothered to address a single substantive point raised last summer by Mark Yost. On the contrary, he follows with a gratuitous ad hominem slam on me, and concludes with this curious juxtaposition:

Pitts is a journalist and a hurricane victim with a first-person story to tell about FEMA's swift response...Van Steenwyck is, by his own account, an avidly partisan blogger dedicated to a point-of-view, factual accounts be damned.
I have no trouble at all figuring out who to believe.

Well, that's rich. Apparently, I'm the only "avid partisan" who's ever picked up a keyboard. But dismissing one's rhetorical opponents as partisans while avoiding a substantive discussion of the facts is a well-known fallacy that wouldn't even pass muster in a high school debate team practice. I suppose the tactic might fare better at Columbia University. I don't know.

Apparently, neither Pitts, nor Administration and FEMA critics, are ever "dedicated to a point-of-view," at least sufficient for the intellectually honest Steve Lovelady to discount their views as steeply as Lovelady discounts my own. Indeed, it's surprising to me that an intellectually honest observer could levy the avid partisan charge at me, and yet somehow omit the avid partisanship of Leonard Pitts. For example, here is an excerpt from Pitts' September 16th column: "Katrina Shows Bush Jihadists Have Blind Faith:"

Bush jihadists say Bush is not responsible.

Seldom has the intellectual bankruptcy, situational outrage and robotic partisanship of that stratum of the electorate been more apparent. I swear, if Bush blew up the White House, they'd praise him for creating construction jobs.

Here is the oh-so-balanced-and-neutral Leonard Pitt in his Pre-Katrina, August 26th column:
In part this is because the president is famously intolerant of criticism and notoriously fumble-tongued when working without a script, so his handlers would rather chew glass than send him out to confront an angry protester who knows exactly what she believes and why. It is also because no president can afford to be seen as having been bullied into doing something. So Sheehan's vigil near the president's Crawford, Texas, ranch is likely to continue until the end of Bush's extended vacation without reaching resolution.

Unless you count embarrassing a president who badly needed embarrassing. In which case, Sheehan's demand for a meeting has already been a smashing success.

This is largely because Sheehan has one quality most protesters lack: moral authority. Her 24-year-old son Casey was killed in Baghdad last year. So it's hard for the attack dogs of the Republican right to go after her with the smear-the-messenger vitriol they usually unleash when someone says heretical things about the great and powerful Bush.

Mr. Lovelady, in short, is so inept - so blinded - that he can't figure out that Leonard Pitts is every bit the "avid" partisan that I am, and every bit as "committed to a point-of-view." In fact, that much strikes me as so glaringly obvious, that in view of Lovelady's failure to discern that self-evident fact, I would question his qualifications to teach a challenging 10th grade reading class, much less head one of the nation's leading media criticism publications.

And apparently, Mr. Pitts is the only one between us who has, in Lovelady's words, a "first-person story" to tell.

That's right. Despite two tours as a headquarters company commander, a combat tour as a headquarters company XO, a brief interlude, in combat, as a battalion S-4, actual mobilizations for Charley, Jeanne, and Frances, an alert for Mitch, two mobilizations for Hurricane Dennis, a mobilization for Katrina when it hit the Keys (though I did not directly participate), another warning order for deployment to Mississippi in October for Katrina relief (turns out they didn't need us, but we still went through the planning for it as far as we could), and a mobilization for Hurricane Rita, AND despite the fact that I was also on the ground in the Kendall region in South Miami a week after hurricane Andrew (I was on a 4 day pass from the Infantry Officer Basic Course at Fort Benning Georgia, that labor day weekend, helping my late grandmother clean up), apparently only Pitt has any valid experiences to speak intelligently about hurricane relief.

Steve Lovelady, though, is in a perfect position to judge, though, being in an air-conditioned office in Manhattan and all.

Yes, I am a conservative. I am not, however, by my own admission, an "avid partisan." And as for the factual content of my logistics post, no one yet has seriously challenged them on their merits. Rather, obvious satire articles aside, the characterization "factual accounts be damned" is a professional smear bordering on defamation.

Concludes Lovelady: "I have no trouble at all figuring out who to believe."

Neither do I. Believe us both. I have no doubt that Pitt's account is accurate. And Lovelady has no real substantive reason to dismiss my writing out of hand, either.

And Lovelady was clearly not telling the truth when he mislead PressThink readers about the content of my posting. I think a correction is in order.

That is, if Mr. Lovelady is, in fact, "intellectually honest."

Pardon me if I don't hold my breath, though. Rather, I feel silence in the offing, or another temper tantrum, some name-calling, and another avoidance of substantive discussion of factual information.

That is Lovelady's pattern as I've seen it, anyway.

"Shill" indeed.

Update: Correction: Steve Lovelady is not the editor of the Columbia Journalism Review. He was the honcho of Campaign Desk, and still contributes to CJR Daily, though no longer appears on the CJR masthead as a contributing editor. Maybe he's gone into Stealth Mode, like Victor Navasky was, before he got outed.

Comments:
I've noticed that journalists are exhibiting the same behaviour as politicians. When faced with uncomfortable facts they spin and name call. And it's not just folks like Steve Lovelady.
When I asked the normally thoughtful Jay Rosen, over at Jeff Jarvis's site whether the lessons a reporter wished his readers to take from an event were more important than the facts of the event. He basically called me a fascist and disappeared.
Now, I hadn't been as polite as I should have. Angered by what I perceived as Mr. Rosen's refusal to answer the question, I had referred to him as a politcian. So I'll take my adhominem without complaint.
Still, he didn't answer the question. Facist or no, I wasn't entitled to an answer? Or did Mr. Rosen just not want to answer the question? Just as perhaps, Mr. Lovelady didn't want to address the facts of your reply?
I suspect what is happeing here is this. The journalist class has come to see themselves as opinion shapers rather than chroniclers of events, sort of like politicians. Therefore they conduct themselves like politicians. That would be well and good if they would stop pretending they were ubiased reporters of fact.

BTW the thread where I asked Mr. Rosen the question was at Jeff Jarvis's site, Buzzmachine. It was entitled Needless Exagerration. Two other threads, Seeing the Forest for the Flood and Correcting the Facts and Missing the Truth, are also pretty instructive. They're a little further down the page.

Agreed. I was once surprised by unprofessional behavior on Lovelady's part. Rosen too. Now I realize its the standard. I think watergate elevated the journalist class to a position in society that they never deserved. We need to lower our expectations, or just ignore them all together. A few are honest chasers-after-truth, but most are mere hacks with an agenda.

What I love most about the blogosphere is its ability to constantly reveal their lack of ethics, judgement, and ability. I'll take Powerline, Belmont Club and Malkin over the NYTs every day.

Thank you for your patient, thoughtful and thorough discrediting of Steve Lovelady and his "prestigious" publication. He truly has no clothes. It is obvious that Columibia J students and their professors and editors and most reporters lack the reading comprehension skills and intellect to get into law school. That is why they are so easily fisked. (See Powerline's recent fisking of Marvin Kalb/Dan Rather).
It has been my experience that conservative web sites for the most part deal in fact and logic, correct inaccuracies or mistakes willingly and welcome thoughtful, honest criticism with respect and serious discussion.
Steve Lovelady should be taking instruction from you. If he is training the next crop of editors/reporters for the New York Times, LOL!
I am new to your site, but will be visiting often. What Steve Lovelady does not realize is: the jigs up. His statements/biases/agenda are no longer shielded behind those ivy covered towers, they are disseminated and on display for the world to see, evaluate and scrutinize in the cold harsh light of the facts and truth. And frankly they don't stand up and are in fact comical.

Two other threads... are also pretty instructive.

Also check out Rosen's:

http://journalism.nyu.edu/pubzone/weblogs/pressthink/2005/09/16/opn_ltr.html

Discussion surrounding MSM blindness of its own bias is "tired" - code for "we'd rather re-arrange deck chairs than deal with that pesky iceburg again".

Bring it up twice and you're a "media-hater". I'm sure its only a matter of time before their elitist cock-tail circuit insists on the need to be protected with thought-crime legislation.

Where Mr. Lovelady writes "I have no trouble at all figuring out who to believe," that should be "whom to believe."

I used to follow Rosen but eventually gave up. Too much circle the wagons, not enough 'good stuff.'

On topic now: These guys and gals are union members first, journalists second and perhaps a few of them are Americam third (or perhaps lase.)

After all the really great thing about Peter Jennings is that he knew that there is no such thing as the truth. (paraphrase of B. Walters [gag].)

Uncle Bill

Rosen and Lovelady are so thick, so blind, that it does not occur to them that they emphsize the negative perceptions others have of the profession.

Are we talking past each other? Do they truly not see?
Or do they still think we're supposed to take our medicine and shut up?

They just don't get it.

As others have said, they have no clothes and they're the only ones who don't know it. Even while they strut down Main Street ringing a bell, they don't know the rest of us see.

Let Me Tell You About Steve Lovelady!

Mr. Lovelady has some rather pronounced character issues...

He claims to be a "Pulitzer Prize winning-editor".... But go to pulitzer.org and see for yourself if you find his name among the winners in the database....

He slimes people with libel in a manner I can't believe....

Michelle Malkin, according to Steve Lovelady, is a "disgrace to her race" (whatever that is supposed to mean- Malkin is a Philly girl, after all)

He called Mark Yost a "lying sack of shit" simply for criticizing war coverage... Yet Mr. Lovelady has never addressed a single one of the factual arguments in Yost's editorial...

Mr. Lovelady has done worse; he has claimed that Gary Berkley, the Knight Ridder newspaper publisher who retired after a distinguished 25 year career at the same paper, was "dumped" by Knight Ridder because he "couldn't run a two-car funeral, let alone a newspaper"

Well... I contacted Mr. Berkley and a former vice president of Knight Ridder, both of whom say that Lovelady is not only wrong, but also that he has never even met either of them!

When confronted with the denial and the evidence, Lovelady refused to either substantiate or retract his vicious allegation... And THIS is the "neutral watchdog" of "professional journalism"?...

Why would Steve Lovelady lie about Mr. Berkley (whom he never even met)?....

Because Mr. Berkley had the nerve to post a reasoned defense of Mark Yost on Romensko, that's why...

And the only way Mr. Lovelady could refute Mr. Berkley's defense was by disparaging his reputation...

It is truly amazing that a man in Mr. Lovelady's position is so willing to stoop to libel in order to attack his colleagues...

For what it's worth, I live in Homestead now (18XXX SW 312 st) as well as in 1992 when Andrew hit. Jason is absolutely correct. Electrical poles fallen over the roadways made them impassable. We took care of ourselves and our friends. Churches and Fraternal associations were the main relief suppliers. It was a couple of weeks before we could even drive across town to where FEMA had set up their tent city. We were without power for six months. Andrew was a very small very strong storm and above the Tamiami trail (SW 40st) there was little or no damage. I read the Miami Herald daily and Leonard Pitts is a democratic hack who does not live in Homestead.

Don't forget Eatongate:

Steve Lovelady emails: “The salivating morons who make up the lynch mob prevail. (Where is Jimmy Stewart when we need him ?) This convinces me more than ever that Eason Jordan is guilty of one thing, and one thing only — caring for the reporters he sent into battle, and haunted by the fact that not all of them came back. Like Gulliver, he was consumed by Lilliputians.”

http://journalism.nyu.edu/pubzone/weblogs/pressthink/2005/02/11/esn_res.html

It's a huge post about Eason Jordan resigning you may want to search from Lovelady.

The salivating morons he is referring to are bloggers.

Exactly Corvan.

The reason being that they are politicians, although unelected.

They know they have influence, they fight to keep it, and openly admit their supposed job is to balance the government. That may be no noble, it may have been intended by our founders [I can't speak there], but it most certainly is not an objective press by any stretch the of the words.

Except, for decades, they've been able to play this role with the credibility of an outside and third-party when in reality, they've got interests too.

In one of my classes we watched a video on jouranlistic coverage of Kosovo and the Balkans. The entire video was a "rah rah rah" of "reporters can make a difference" and "it is our duty to call attention to injustice."

In the specific context it may have been admirable, however that is not objectivity. That's politiking. None of them saw any inconsistency or ethics problem, because as Corvan said, they increasingly see themselves as crusaders and the issues as clear. Being surrounded by likeminded people doesn't help.

And the disturbing thing is that it isn't just Steve Lovelady. Of course, we all know what he does on the web becuase we have read him. And we know how to adjust for the slope of his green.
But the rest of them seem more and more to be spin doctors pushing a position as well.
If you check out Jeff Jarvis's post "Seeing the Forest for the Flood," he seems to be arguing that the lessons that an event teaches are more important than what actually happened in the event. To me that seems a horribly dangerous postion for folks we assume to be reporters.
But take it he did, and defended it. And Jeff Jarvis is, by no means, a gonzo journalist. If he feels that shaping opinion is more important than reporting facts what do the rest of them think? And why won't they put away the spin and just tell us?
This isn't a problem just on the left either. Mr. Jarvis sighted a Jonah Goldberg column in which Jonah blamed the press's excesses on the local government, the state government, bloggers and even the racism inherent in our society. After that he told us there was a lot of blame to go around, and wait for it...he hoped everyone had learned a "lesson."
When does the media, all of it, learn its lesson?
When does one of them actually try to find out who Dan Rather's impeachable sourse was? When does one of them make even a token effort to really find out what sort of game Judith Miller has been playing with the Plame Gate Special Prosecutor? When do they realize that in their rush to shape opinion they have made themselves news as well. Claiming the story isn't about them is no longer enough, if it ever was. I'm hoping that's the lesson they learn.

I’ve read many of Lovelady’s comments on pressthink. I characterize ALL of them as “hit-and-run snark”. He NEVER talks substance – because he CAN’T.

Lovelady exemplifies the MSM’s main problem: They have become so perceptually crippled and intellectually incompetent that they no longer have the ability to find or interpret the facts of an unfolding story – even if they try.

So when press- or air-time comes and they have to say something, (just to keep getting paid), they have nothing to “report” but their own ill-informed opinions and shallow biases – which are always drawn from the lefty media monoculture. And since they are almost all that way, few will ever notice it and fewer will ever escape from it.

The media’s lefty bias is not really a conspiracy folks, its just blind and brain-dead dinosaurs being replaced by more nimble life forms.

When I want to test for the preference to "deal in fact and logic, correct inaccuracies or mistakes willingly and welcome thoughtful, honest criticism with respect and serious discussion", I rely upon the litmus test of the circumcision issue, specifically the argument for equally protecting males' right to genital integrity.

Sadly, I find that very, very few people measure up -- regardless of their political or professional or other alignments.

Great post.
I agree with almost all the comments -- I'm a regular Media Bias hater on PressThink.

But I'll spend more time there, trying to talk to and understand folk I do NOT understand, then here where everybody agrees with me already.

I mean, if I liked comfort so much, I wouldn't have left Sili Valli for Slovakia.

But at Jay's advice, I'm doing a bit more media bashing at Public Eye / CBS. I hope, Jason, you submit your accounts of FEMA response to CBS as a comparison story.

I hope more conservatives write little stories, that the media "might" play.

So, again; I agree -- but I came here looking for an argument! (not abuse though, either.)

Tom, if you find some Lefties willing to debate issues in good faith, please let us know.

As for Steve Lovelady, I'm beginning to agree with others - he belongs with Nick Coleman and Maureen Dowd, in the "ridiculous waste of time" stack. I check in on them only to recalibrate my parody/satire awareness.

It doesn't take a lot of reading over at Pressthink to realize that debating Steve Lovelady is a colossal waste of time and effort. I have never seen him reply in a substantive manner to a substantive question. He apparently considers that his peculiar mixture of venom and haughty condescension allows him to avoid having to deal with anything as plebian as actual issues.

Frightening to think that someone with so few critical thinking skills and yet so much sophistry has attained the position he has in the world of journalism.

Actually it's par for the course. You see I don't think journalism is a fact oriented business any more. It's just politics, plain and simple...maybe it always was.

I've seen both Lovelady and Rosen throw tantrums on Press Think. Both have incredibly thin skins, and usually deployt countless logical falacies when responding to criticism. I've had better correspondance during political discussions with high schoolers.

Actually if you go to the Homeland Security website, you will find under emergency management that they (with FEMA under them) accept primary responsibility.

Anonymous:

Actually, you're wrong as a football bat. The Department of Homeland Security's website does not say they accept primary responsibility. They say they WILL accept primary responsibility in March. But not for everything.

And if you've been reading here, you would know that getting massive ground-based support into New Orleans from outside the storm-impacted area is logistically impossible, no matter who is writing the checks.

G'day Blogger, what a great blog you have here, been entertained by the read. Just noticed that my brief time visiting blogs looking for downline mlm network marketing items has run into a couple of hours. Easily done when you get engrossed in what people write about. I should really use downline mlm network marketing as a search term but then I might miss places such as this post. Besides which working all the time is boring.

Although I don't think you can use fasting as a diet or weight loss program, I do feel that it can be a great start to a proper weight loss diet and exercise program. I think it is definitely something that everyone should do at least once a year.

One of the better results I saw from my fasting experience was that I have more self control over my eating habits. I have always been a binge type of eater. After my fast, I felt like I could restrain myself easier. It is proberbly a mental attribute. I mean I can go without eating for 7 days then I sure can keep myself from eating something I shouldn't.

Once you come across a dedicated Daycare Provider you begin to understand that working in the Child Care field is a labor of love and certainly not a labor for monetsry gain. According to Madga Martinez, UNM Career Works, "Providers earn $12,058 per year on average, and seldom receive benifits or paid leave."
