Fiddle blogging

The late John Kelly, and his two sons, James and John, circa 1977. James, in the back row, is my fiddle teacher. And a great one. (Thanks, James!)

Seeing John Hartford on Down From The Mountain turned my musician head around. I was of the opinion that the best musician possible played the most devilishly difficult pieces devilishly fast. Here, John Hartford played this simple fiddle tune simply, without dragging or rushing, making it come alive without needing to rewrite half of it or use special tricks to make it come alive.

He, simply speaking, is one of the finest musicians whose work I have heard. And John Kelly is another one. Thank you.
