Incompetent coverage at the New York Times
America has been at war now for over four years. And yet the New York Times editorial staff cannot be bothered to learn even the most basic things about our armed forces.

Here's Jennifer Mascia, demonstrating her rank ineptitude in a profile about a Harlem recruiter in a piece called "Sergeant Guzman's War."

Unlike the Marines, Army infantry and Special Forces, which send volunteers straight from boot camp to the front lines, the Harlem Knights Army unit signs potential recruits up for more than 200 noncombat jobs, everything from laundry and textile specialist to flute player to dental specialist.

Look, you knuckle-sucking morons: You have to be an E-5 promotable or an 0-2 just to get accepted to the Special Forces Q-course. And even if you make it through that course, the MOSQ for Special Forces is a year long. And the basic airborne course is also a prerequisite.

And that's not even counting language training.

"Straight from boot camp to the front lines" my ass. When is the Times going to get someone on their staff who has a clue?

Furthermore, NOBODY goes straight from "boot camp" to the front lines. Everyone goes from basic training to their MOS specialty schools first before they are even a deployable asset. Sometimes the basic training and advanced individual training happen in the same place (it's called "One Station Unit Training," in the Army). But everyone in the Army attends a follow-on school after basic.

Everyone.

Anyone with a four-year enlistment in their past could have spotted that rubbish, and saved the New York Times a bunch of egg on their faces.

If they don't know even the most basic facts about where Special Forces come from, then what else are they getting wrong?

Splash, out

Hey cool, I'm a Harlem Knight!

My recruiter was then-SSG Sostre at the Harlem recruiting station, back in 96-97. He didn't have to do much to recruit me, except the standard show up at oh-dark thirty to pick up the recruit bit. I was one of those guys who showed up and said "where do I sign?".

The combat support and combat service support are disproportionately non-white, as compared to combat arms, so it doesn't surprise me if most recruits in Harlem sign up for non-combat MOSs. I'm not white and I was Intel. In my experience (my recruiter experience is all of 1 week has a hometown recruiter), the recruiters didn't try to dissuade anyone from combat arms, nor did they push one MOS harder than any other. They mostly played ignorant on the specific details regarding MOS. At MEPS (Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn), they give you a bunch of MOS options. The ones I remember were tanker, mech infantry, and most of the intel MOSs.

I have to commend you for taking the time to read the NYT, since I refuse to read that Stalinist rag. My reason is that what you found is an everyday occurance - so why bother. But since you will probably continue reading that trash, you should write a letter to the editor although I doubt they will print it because they are completely in the Stalinist tank.

To quote from www.goarmy.com

"The Army is now recruiting civilians to join the U.S. Special Forces."

The Army takes a limited number of highly qualified recruits straight off the street and puts them in SF. And it has for serveral years post 9/11.

"Anyone with a four-year enlistment in their past could have spotted that rubbish, and saved the New York Times a bunch of egg on their faces."

Hate to contradict, but how, exactly, can they have egg on their face if their readership either doesn't know or doesn't care about these errors? The reporters are either ignorant or fabricating - tough to tell which at the NYT - and their target audience shares their agenda AND considers such plebian knowedge about the doings of knucklegraggers to be beneath them. So really, the agenda was adhered to, the correct things were said and all the right people agree. Good job all 'round - nothing to be ashamed of and no egg.

16 weeks. By congressional mandate every Soldier, sailor, airman, and marine, must receive 16 weeks of training prior to deployment overseas.
