Should Sites Have Aired the Marine Shooting Video?
Some members of the idiot wing of the political spectrum think so.
My take:
Sites is a reporter. Not a houseplant.
You cannot shoot someone who is hors de combat in front of a rolling camera and expect a reporter not to cover it. It's what reporters do. It's their job.
It's not his job to edit himself and only cover stories convenient to the military. It's not his job to whitewash anything.
His first loyalty is to the truth.
And the truth is the Marine shot that man.
I would have aired it, too.

The truth would have required waiting for a complete investigation. We didn't get truth. We got a picture out of context. Like a word without a sentence, chances are that, without context, the meaning will be wrongly interpreted most of the time. That means it was mostly a lie. Perception, in such cases, has more power than intent.
Perception cannot encompass truth, but truth encompasses all perceptions. An investigation will join many perceptions to get an understanding closer to the reality of the moment, but Sites couldn't wait for that; old news is not sensational.
Sites has the freedom to decide what to do with an image. Americans gave him that freedom. What did he give America in return? Body bags with Americans in them. Paint this picure any way you want, Site's decision will cost lives. Sites not only betrayed truth, he betrayed the Marines who were protecting him and therefore he betrayed his country. But then he acknowledges he was only concerned about the "left" and the "right". All he had to do was wait. No one prevented him from showing the image, but he should have waited until context could be provided. But, my oh my, what a sacrifice it is to wait. Meanwhile across the city, a soldier hugged a grenade to save his buddies, and what does NBC play? Site's sensation.
Site's letter shows that his conscience is bothering him. Either that or he wants to smooth out the ripples he made with people who protected him and gave him a ride into combat. I wouldn't let him in my outfit. Hesitation can cost American lives and Sites will, forever more, breed hesitation in the soldiers around him. He needs to be removed from military association.
