The Great American Gollum: The Democratic Sellout
The Washington Post's Dana Milbank thinks that Republican campaign rhetoric is crossing a line.

President Bush and leading Republicans are increasingly charging that Democratic presidential nominee John F. Kerry and others in his party are giving comfort to terrorists and undermining the war in Iraq -- a line of attack that tests the conventional bounds of political rhetoric.

Well, Dana, the Kerry Campaign has already told the Australian people that they are a bigger terrorism target now thanks to standing with the U.S. on Iraq, and thereby strengthened the hand of John Howard's opponent, who has promised to pull out of Iraq if he's elected.

If that doesn't undermine the war in Iraq, I don't know what does.

Oh, yes I do. How about this:

Joe Lockhart is publicly and literally--using vivid language as suitable for soundbites on Al Jazeera as it is on CBS-- accusing Prime Minister Allawi of being a Bush puppet.

“The last thing you want to be seen as is a puppet of the United States, and you can almost see the hand underneath the shirt today moving the lips,”

Asshat.

This careless, undiplomatic, reckless and ignorant statement plays directly into the hands of those who would undermine the provisional Iraqi government.

Believe me, the insurgents and terrorists will use words like those against us, just as the North Vietnamese used John Kerry's public assertions that American commanders in Viet Nam were war criminals against American POWs at Hanoi Hilton.

This campaign has become cynical beyond belief. They are lusting after the Presidency like Gollum for the Ring, and are willing to sell out any friend and slither under any rock neccessary in order to obtain it.

Dana Milbank misses the point entirely.

The rhetorical line has already been crossed. The Republicans just happen to be pointing out the fact.

Splash, out

Jason

Comments:
What a great analogy. It's particularly appropriate, thinking about the scenes where Gollum argues with himself.

"War in Iraq GOOOD!!!! It was right to overthrow Saddam!"

"NO, you FOOL! Iraq bad, Bush LYING! Can't trustess the Bushessss!"

Just some thoughts. Been reading a long time and not posting.

One thing that I am becoming very sure of is that when this election is over and Kerry has lost, it will not be the end of the attacks from the Democrats, nor an end to there determination to play "antiwar" and undermine the efforts.

for sure, there will be some that try to get back to reality, but definitely, the Ted Kennedys and Kerrys will be even more anti-war in their stand and behavior when they lose. Sore losers they are. If you recall, it was Ted Kennedy and that sort, who, long before this election cycle, were calling Afghanistan a quagmire within weeks of the invasion.

What we have here is a serious ideological split. Not like it's never been seen, or even before the infamous Vietnam protests. Be ready for a reaction on the Democrats part that was similar to the South Carolinians declaring secession after Lincolns win. This is nothing compare to what they will let loose with when they are no longer trying to court the center of their party. [now let's see if the crystal ball is working on or about nov3]

LoL. Gollum... an interesting picture. Maybe he'll jump off into the lava after the presidency?

I sympathize with the vet with offspring in or going to Iraq. It is a tough situation and mistakes surely have been made. Much can be debated. But let's get real. Maybe a more multinational force would work better? Maybe it would, but there is ZERO chance of a significant increase in other national forces. Surely not France or Germany. The only possibility is Russia.

This isn't VietNam 2 - our President has promised the troops WHATEVER IT TAKES to win the war, unlike Lyndon Johnson. So soon we forget that there are 3000 American citizens who died because of attacks on OUR SOIL. The threat to this country is very, very real. If we don't go there, they come here - perhaps again and again. Kerry is despicable, without substance and wouldn't know the truth if it slapped him in the face. (See www.stolenhonor.com in addition to www.swiftvets.com) That many veterans suffering for the imperiousness and arrogant lies of one makes me wretch. I also urge you to view a documentary by Herbert Meyer entitled "The Siege of Western Civilization" wherein Mr. Meyer lays out the facts in black and white. The war on terror is like a cancer - if we don't go to the ends of the earth to get it all, it will come back, perhaps growing stronger as it does. God bless this country for sharing her resources to create democracies in parts of the world that can't do it alone - and God bless our troops, past and present, each and every one, wherever they are.

I know that it is possible to question the Iraq war on many grounds and that is fine. But the key disagreement I have with the Vet who posted his disagreements on the war is that he seems to have forgotten that we go into war to win, not to lose. His son, though to him a loving young man, is a professional soldier, trained to do a job that involves killing the enemy. We don't want him to be harmed, but he is doing what he was trained to do and what he chose to do. To question this war while it is still in progress (and he is right, it matters how you question it), must be done in order to find ways to win, ways to help his son be successful in the task he has chosen, the task of protecting us against terrorists. You don't question it by going to Australia and trying to affect an election outcome. That is traitorous. And you don't question it by using the same tactics that were used in Vietnam to help the North Vietnamese win (lies and propaganda). Kerry and his surrogates are doing everything they can to defeat the U.S. as a way of being elected. The comments made in this blog above about how harmful are Kerry's statements are true. Kerry is acting reprehensibly and he is a true traitor - he is putting our young men in harm's way by encouraging the terrorists to fight harder and hold on.

I question the Iraq war because I want to win it and I want to make sure we win it. Here is where we made our mistake: We should not have gone into Iraq to topple Saddam or to bring Democracy. Nor should we have gone in to fight the war on "terror" or, especially, to get WMD. As has been written elsewhere, "terror" is not the enemy. Terror is a tactic our enemy uses. We should have gone into Iraq because Saddam harbored Islamic militants intent on doing harm to the United States. The enemy here is not terror, it is a group of Islamic militants who see the U.S. as evil and would do anything to destroy us.

So, yes, I would have gone into Iraq...to win and to get those guys we knew were there and to stop Saddam from supporting them in other parts of the world. That is what Bush should have talked about and he should have mustered all his intelligence and all the facts to prove it. He didn't need to pander to the liberals or ask the UN for "authority."

That he did not focus the war properly, however, is not a reason to vote for Kerry.

I think the name calling started with the Dems who wanted to use the excuse that Bush stole the last election which is a lie and felt that that would be a good place to start this election.

As for Islamic militants, the point I made was that Bush should have pointed up a whole set of facts other than WMD. He should have targetted the enemy correctly and I don't mean to imply that we need to invade every country that has these radicals...we invade those that won't change their attitude toward them and stop giving them sanctuary. We took them on in Afganistan, Pakistan changed their attitude and began helping us, Saudi Arabia is not our enemy, they are just corrupt but have recently begun directly taking on the militants, Libya allowed inspectors and disarmed. It is not necessary to invade every country that harbors them. Saddam openly encouraged them, gave them sanctuary, paid for suicide bombers, had training camps and did not comply with UN demands to disarm. He had an openly anti-American attitude and now we are discovering that he may have also financed Al Queda through the Oil for Food program (that means the UN also helped finance Al Queda). Saddam was merely the next one who had to go in order to fight the Islamic militants.

That is a battle worth fighting if that is the enemy we want to destroy. Making Iraq free or democratic, eliminating their suffering, etc. should not be our goals though they would be results that would help us eliminate the ability of Al Queda to find sanctuary in the future and that is what we seek to prevent...their using a weak or willing nation for sanctuary and training facilities.

It should not be our goal to change the world into free democracies...our goal should be to ensure those b....ds don't have the ability to attack us again.

The whole point of discussion is not to just disagree but for people to learn the facts, properly stated, and change their minds. George Bush and his campaign have never called names. The Dems have lied countless times about Bush. They have defamed, libelled, slandered and otherwise misinformed the electorate. Those are the facts. I find it strange that it is the Dems who seek moral equivalency on this issue but wind up equivocating and obfuscating on just what it is Bush lied about...most often they just ignore the fact that they have been refuted countless times and continue to tell the same lies over and over. Consider what they will do about the political opposition if they gain power. Be afraid, be very afraid.

As for the Iran vs. Iraq issue, you have to consider that Bush probably thought that Iran had a lot of internal political strife, many young people who want a bit more political and personal freedom. Why not let that play out to see if things change? As I said, it is not necessary to invade every country to make it democratic. Quibbling about "why Iraq?" is like asking if you want to eat the green apple or the red, it is just the libs way of undermining Bush...attack everything. It is kind of a shotgun approach but lacking in any real philosophy or even semi-valid political theory. The Dems only campaign strategy is "anybody but Bush" and that is not really a strategy, it is vapid and lacking in substance. The Dems are still trying to hold on to their base which is about 30% of the electorate, I suspect. When are they actually going to discuss issues and ideas for the future that are not based on distortions of Bush policies? Perhaps the debates will force them to start thinking about it. For many of us that are tired of their whining and insults, it is about time.

Mel,

I wish everyone who was against the war in Iraq was as considerate of the other side as you. Both sides have their morons, but it's clear you make an attempt to not villify the other side.

I do have one significant question for you though. Paraphrasing, you state that if we could all just agree to disagree, things would be much more palatable. While that is likely true (it's never happened, so how do we know? ;-), how do you respond to Kerry's remarks about Allawi only being here to put a good face on for Bush? How about his sister telling Australians that they would be safer if they pulled out and disassociated themselves from the US? And Joe Lockhart explicitly saying that Allawi is simply a US puppet, after even the UN has recognized him as Iraq's legitimate leader? Can you see how people have a serious problem with the Democratic campaign when their actions clearly benefit NO ONE? Can their statements be seen as constructive in any way? These are seriously harmful statements for our soldiers and I would challenge you to explain how this can be seen as simply electoral disagreement.

I firmly believe that Kerry has to answer for this or he deserves no one's vote.

Hi ##NAME##, I was looking for more informationon ##KEYWWOD##, and I came across your real good blog ##TITLE##. A lot of people must feel like saving it. It got my attention. Right now anything like hyip fraud interests me, too. Could you slso get excited about ending the day with $150 for every $100 you started with, or $55 for every $50, and start with a measly $1.00 or $1,000 investment or spend. You think we found a cash machine but this is about risky HYIPs where according to them you can expect to collect say .5% to 50% every day because it's no gamble. WRONG! Be ready to lose your butt to a scam! This site will tell you why ##LINK##, like it is and not the advertised or blogged crap. Wake up and find out what's going on before you lose tomorrow's debt payments today! You don't have to get the $47 ebook to avoid losing money on HYIPs, you also can get it to see how the pros who wrote the book MAKE money at HYIPs - and for you, too!

Hey ##NAME##

Hi ##NAME##, while looking for info on hyip fraud, I saw your blog ##TITLE##. A lot of people got excited by it. Those may be the same folks who get excited about the idea of ending the day with $150 for every $100 they "spend" in a HYIP. In time they will have to face up to having lost their butts in a scam, fraud, or ponzi scheme. Better to have the hyip fraud information upfront like in the ##LINK##. You don't have to buy the ebook & membership for $47 to avoid losing - or just don't play - until you know how the pros who wrote it make their money - and yours too!

Hi ##NAME##,
I always like an interesting blog. ##TITLE## caught my attention even if I was looking for ##LINK## blogs. Kind of gets my thoughts moving coming from a different angle about home based business. Hope to check back every now and then. Have a nice day :-)

If you make it to my site and can offer some constructive critisizm I will take it into consideration or if you have some ideas it will be greatly appreciated.
