Good Grief, are we STILL This Fucked Up?
The Army is still keeping wounded Guardsmen and reservists in medical holding units far from their families and communities for months, and in at least one case, for more than a year, because "the Army has no policies for wounded guardsmen to coalesce at home."

This is nearly a year after UPI broke the story about the fiasco at the medical holding unit at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
People, we have Tricare now. We can contract with civilian health care providers for this stuff.
Wounded active duty soldiers get to return to their home stations, where their families live nearby. Wounded reserve component soldiers are often kept hundreds of miles away from their families for months at a time, where they are stuck in a Kafkaesque bureaucratic Kudzu.
Several of my own Miami soldiers were stuck at Fort Stewart--some 400 miles away from their families--for months, with no useful duties other than pick up cigarrette butts and go to a couple of appointments each week.
Thank god they're all out now, but my Battalion still has soldiers up there, with no families nearby, and no nearby, local leadership from their own units to look out for them.
The money quote--from a soldier's frustrated fiancee--comes at the end: How can it take nine months to have doctors’ check you over and decide what to do with you?”

National Guard officials conceded it was an oversight in the military’s plans for the Iraq war. Those relied heavily on National Guard and reserve units, but did not write specific policies for treating the wounded in their home communities when they returned.
