Air Force Follies
Is there no end to the stupidity and desperation of the Democratic National Committee?

A DNC press release argues that Bush lied when he said on some campaign literature that he served in the US Air Force and the Texas Air National Guard.

Campaign Literature Shows Bush Has Lied Before About His Service
George W. Bush's campaign literature claimed that he "served in the U.S. Air Force." The only problem? He didn't.

As Bush continues to refuse to answer questions about his National Guard Service, Bush campaign literature in 1978 includes a lie about his military service. Flyers distributed to Texas voters during Bush's failed Congressional race say "he served in the U.S. Air Force and the Texas Air National Guard." But according to Air Force officials, Air National Guardsmen are not counted as members of the active-duty Air Force. [AP, 7/13/99; The Nation, 8/24/04]

"George Bush has a clear pattern of lying about his military service," said DNC Communications Director Jano Cabrera. "From 1978 to the present day, George Bush has refused to tell voters the truth about his service. It's time for the President to come clean."

The ignorance, ladies and gentlemen, is breathtaking. First of all, you don't have to be Curtis LeMay to know that the Texas Air National Guard does not do its own initial active duty training. Drudge actually uncovers the initial service agreement signed by Bush in 1968, which placed him in on active duty in the reserve component of the U.S. Air Force for a period of at least 120 days. (He would have had to spend more time on active duty in order to go to flight school, though he probably would have done so on TANG orders.)

Further, Bush did not claim to be a member of the "Active Duty Air Force," beyond this initial ADT period. Although he was on active duty, he was technically a member of the Air Force Reserve, according to the agreement.

Also, according to the U.S. Air Force itself, the Air National Guard is not a separate service, but is one of two reserve components of the U.S. Air Force.

One does not have to be a member of the Active component of the U.S. Air Force to be a member of the U.S. Air Force.

I'm a member of the Florida Army National Guard. What's stenciled above my pocket?

U.S. ARMY.

Further, here's a photo of a Texas Air National Guard F4 Phantom.

What's it say on the plane?

"U.S. AIR FORCE."

The DNC is, quite simply, propogating a bald-faced lie.

What's more, it's a stupid one, because the more they dwell on service issues, the more they fall behind in the polls.

Splash, out
