An Open Letter to Abu Zarqawi from a Marine
This letter is for Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, “Islamic Response,” and the rest of the so-called “insurgents” in Iraq. I obviously do not have an e-mail address for these vermin, so I am forwarding this letter to my entire address book in the hope you good people will forward it to as many people as possible, and that eventually through the miracle of the internet it somehow ends up in the hands of the intended recipients. Thank you all for your assistance.
This is from my good friend and fellow 3/4 vet. It sums up my feelings as well.
To the terrorists currently operating in Iraq,
I see that you have captured a U. S. Marine, and that you plan to cut off his head if your demands are not met. Big mistake. Before you carry out your threat I suggest you read up on Marine Corps history. The Japanese tried the same thing on Makin Island and in a few other places during World War Two, and came to regret it. Go ahead and read about what then happened to the mighty Imperial Army on Tarawa, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. They paid full price for what they did, and you will too.
You look at America and you see a soft target, and to a large extent you are right. Our country is filled with a lot of spoiled people who drive BMWs, sip decaf lattes and watch ridiculous reality TV shows. They are for the most part decent, hard working citizens, but they are soft. When you cut off Nick Berg’s head those people gasped, and you got the media coverage you sought, and then those people went back to their lives. This time it is different. We also have a warrior culture in this country, and they are called Marines. It is a brotherhood forged in the fire of many wars, and the bond between us is stronger than blood. While it is true that this country has produced nitwits like Michael Moore, Howard Dean and Jane Fonda who can be easily manipulated by your gruesome tactics, we have also produced men like Jason Dunham, Brian Chontosh and Joseph Perez. If you don’t recognize those names you should. They are all Marines who distinguished themselves fighting to liberate Iraq, and there will be many more just like them coming for you.
Before the current politically correct climate enveloped our culture one of the recruiting slogans of our band of brothers was “The Marine Corps Builds Men.” You will soon find out just how true that is. You, on the other hand, are nothing but a bunch of women. If you were men you would show your faces, and take us on in a fair fight. Instead, you are cowards who hide behind masks and decapitate helpless victims. If you truly represented the interest of the Iraqi people you would not be ambushing those who come to your country to repair your power plants, or sabotage the oil pipelines which fuel the Iraqi economy. Your agenda is hate, plain and simple.
When you raise that sword over your head I want you to remember one thing. Corporal Wassef Ali Hassoun is not alone as he kneels before you. Every Marine who has ever worn the uniform is there with him, and when you strike him you are striking all of us. If you think the Marines were tough on you when they were cleaning out Fallujah a few weeks ago you haven’t seen anything yet. If you want to know what it feels like to have the Wrath of God called down upon you then go ahead and do it. We are not Turkish truck drivers, or Pakistani laborers, or independent contractors hoping to find work in your country. We are the United States Marines, and we will be coming for you.

Comments:
Whoever the 'US Marine' is (if he really is a US Marine at all and not just some kid raised on Rambo movies), he seems to forget that if he IS a member of the United States armed services, accountable to the government and thereby the PEOPLE of the United States of America, not some gung ho avenging barbarian who thinks he can do what he likes.
A US Marine swears allegiance to the Constitution of the USA, not some bloodstained charter for Murder Inc. 'Semper fidelis' - always faithful - means not just faithful to his comrades but to his country, its laws, its values and its people. And while this 'US Marine' might be just indulging in some macho bluster in his e-mail (you'd think he could have gone to the trouble of threatening in Arabic if he was serious), he also needs to wrap his head around the idea that there's such a thing as military discipline and a chain of command.
The Commander-in-Chief doesn't formulate foreign policy or direct war based on the puerile ravings of a fool who disrespects women or the other brave souls who are working hard to assist the reconstruction in Iraq. And if political expediency requires that the US military takes a back seat while Iraq and the Iraqi people find their feet that's how it's going to be. If the word is 'softly, softly' then the 'Marine' will have to do as he is ordered and recognize that he is part of a team and that saner and wiser heads than his are in charge of what happens.
Perhaps this 'Marine' thinks it is a good idea to represent the disciplined armed forces of the USA as some sort of vendetta driven mafia gang. If that is his mindset he should think again about the respect and honor due to the uniform he wears. The US Marines are a disciplined body that serves the American people, not a refuge for some loud-mouthed fool with the values of a street gang.
Look again at your sneering e-mail 'Marine'. You demean women, you demean contractors and underlying your words is a contempt for the American civilians whose safety and honor you are supposed to be defending and promoting. US Marines have family all over the USA, as do other American soldiers, sailors and airmen. So you see, we are ALL involved in our nation's efforts and we ALL play some part in supporting the armed forces. They are of us and they are ours. And we want our serving men and women to behave with courage, integrity and honor and to remember that they are ambassadors for us all.
Mass mailing 'Rambo' e-mails should have no place in the conduct of a US Marine. You are under orders, under oath and under obligation to the American people to act like a disciplined soldier. The e-mail is childish, thuggish and demeans the very honor that you claim to cherish.
Cherish the memory and the reputation of brave US Marines by doing as you are ordered, nothing more, nothing less. Acknowledge that you are representing the American people and all that is finest in American values, not playing a bad role in a cheap Rambo movie. You have no right whatsoever to be issuing letters, e-mails or statements in the name of the US Marines and you should be disciplined for posting your own warped rantings as if you were speaking on behalf of that noble band.
The 'Marine' author of the e-mail does NOT speak for the US Marines, for the American government or for the American people. We are a civilized nation not a lynch mob and it is going to be discipline that wins our victories for us. The tone of the e-mail is the tone of a drunk mouthing off in a bar NOT the tone of a real, disciplined US Marine.

Subsunk,
It's easy enough to see why you and the 'Marine' aren't suitable officer material. And it's easy to see how limited your vision is and how weak your analysis is when you presume to know either the combat experience or any history of a person you're addressing.
I'll say it again, because you're evidently slow like the supposedly gun-toting kid whose Rambo fantasies you share: the US Marines is not an outfit made up of hoodlums and vigilantes. It's a disciplined outfit with a history and values that embrace a whole lot more than the name dropping of some combat theaters. And kids snarling cyber-threats in the name of the US Marines aren't speaking for the Marines or for anything except their moronic selves.
Marines do as they're told, when they're told, and they get on with whatever they're told to do. They don't set policy, they don't organize manhunts and they don't destabilize political situations our government doesn't want destabilized. I have lost more people and know more about loyalty than a cur like you, so take your fantasist's ideas of toughness and stick them where the sun doesn't shine, you moron. Discipline and a chain of command does not mean that commanders are accountable to the dumb, vigilante stupidity of idiots like you, and fortunately the officer corps of the US Marines and other branches of the US military isn't made up of excitable kids.
You think the US Marines are in Iraq to hunt down people you don't like? They're there to carry out orders, you clown, and a good Marine does as he's told. When the chips are down a Marine wants a cool headed, courageous and disciplined comrade watching his back, not some fool who thinks he's John Rambo.
Punks like you and the alleged 'Marine' don't have a future in the US military, you may be strong in the arm but you're too weak in the head to be entrusted with the lives of men and the onerous responsibility of a mission that calls for intelligence not cyber boasting. 'Look at my e-mail, look how tough I am' - absolutely pathetic isn't it?
When the Marines are sent here, sent there, recalled, redeployed, told to sit on their hands, they'll do it. An army runs on discipline and the day the US Marines loses its sense of duty and honor and falls into the hands of bums like you and your fake hero friend is the day it should be disbanded.
Now you get off the airwaves, moron, and let real soldiers do real soldiering. Shooting off at the mouth is for bums, drunks and fakes. You choose which group you belong to because punk, you ain't no US Marine.

Hey chill you guys. Talking tough on the internet isn't gonna catch no terrorists and insulting each other sure as hell don't show much of a united front to folks surfing in.
OK so the kids blowing off, he thinks he's sending a tough talking message to some Arab killer who don't even speak English is the way to go. He's gotta be young, he's maybe itching to have a go at the guy and he's all fired up. Looks like the last US Marine who wandered off on his own is looking to get his head sawed off on camera by them terrorists so don't you worry none about our little soldier, his superiors aren't gonna let him go on no one man warpath looking for glory. If he wants to save his own ass and look out for his bros and do his country some good he'll just have to hunker down and follow the orders of the day and quit being such a blowhard.
Seems to me them Arab terrorists don't particularly care much who's calling them names and they sure as hell won't be stopped or scared by a freakin' email you can bet your last buck on that. It's gonna be Sigint and Humint that blows them boys into the crosshairs and Humint means being nice to the locals so they'll start looking out for you and your buddies. Hell, good as they are the Marines could be wandering around in a freakin' sandstorm for months if they don't have no idea of where they're going or who they're looking for. And you don't get that information playing Audie Murphy on a keyboard, you gotta go out and earn it.
That's right, earn it. You do the right thing by the moderate Arabs and they'll soon turn in those killer mofos, bet on it. And while Kid Crazy is getting all lathered up at his PC and asking half the world to pass on his dumb message that Zarqawi won't ever see or hear of you can bet your sweet ass that there's Special Forces guys out there now doing the legwork that's gonna bring them Arab killers down.
It's intelligence that gets the kills, not boasting, not bullshitting. You know that only 2% of the population of Iraq has regular internet access don't you? You know that only around 12% of them have a working phone? And yet you waste your freakin' time asking folks to spread your words and for what? So they'll think you're a tough cookie? Because you want to think you're a tough cookie? And all that crap about Jane Fonda, what are you? Some Vietnam vet who never made it past basic? Or a dumb kid who is passing on some numb nuts old guy's take on politics? It's 2004 kiddo, get with the program! And what do you no about 'so called political correctness'? Hell, if I had a mind to I'd say that you weren't no US Marine at all but just some dumb old dude trying to pass off some crackpot political statement.
The US forces have got a tough enough job to do without having their lives hijacked by dummies, so if this email is some old buzzard's idea of a patriotic speech I gotta say just stfu you old fool and let the men do the fighting, you just keep picking up your pension check. If the email is genuine and it is by a US Marine do yourself a favor son, get along to the medics and tell them you're cracking up. Maybe that way you can get shipped home and write all the dumbass letters you want. Because I'm telling you this straight, if you think the American people are soft, if you think our women are weak and if you think those contractors who risk their lives day and daily in Iraq are less courageous than you, you're out of your tiny mind.

Looks like that missing US Marine was going to be in trouble whoever found him first:
Captured US Marine had deserted in Iraq, New York Times reports
Captured US Marine had deserted in Iraq, New York Times reports
How can the letter writer say "Corporal Wassef Ali Hassoun is not alone as he kneels before you. Every Marine who has ever worn the uniform is there with him, and when you strike him you are striking all of us." ?????
Hey if the guy's a deserter why not just let the MPs look for him? Or is the letter writer saying that US Marines still owe loyalty to someone who ratted out on them? I know what the guys in my unit would think of someone like that, and it sure ain't good and there sure wouldn't be any volunteers for a search party being got up for no runner neither.

The guy's dead, whether he deserted or not doesn't matter - he was a human being with family and friends and comrades and he tried to do his duty as best as he could. He was traumatized by an incident where some of his colleagues were killed and injured. May God have mercy on his soul and may people be good to his poor family.
Iraqi militants behead US Marine

There's some doubt now about whether the guy's dead or not. Was he ever really a hostage or is he just a deserter who was working for the terrorists? Something about this whole story stinks.
