Lest We Forget: Bruce Shapiro, The Nation, Salon, and Sept. 10th Thinking
Here's Bruce Shapiro, a regular contributing editor of "The Nation," writing for Salon.com in the summer of 2000:
The Hyping of Domestic Terrorism: Why A New Report on the Threat of Terrorist Attacks on US Soil is a Con Job
In it, the author dismisses efforts to increase monitoring of, say, foreign flight students, pooh-poohs the threat of Islamic terrorism on our shores (the real threat, he cites Louis Freeh as saying, is from anti-abortion wackos on the right.) He supports the restrictions on the recruiting of CIA humint sources which hobbled our intelligence gathering capabilities in the late 1990s. He criticizes the broadening of anti-terrorism authority given to then-president Clinton, saying, "The Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act, a draconian package passed by Congress in 1996, gives the president the broadest authority to prosecute suspected "terrorists" in American history, yet not a single instance of "terrorist fundraising" has surfaced for prosecution."

And in a tragic example of the American left parodying itself:
Hey, I can appreciate the "who knew?" defense.
But Shapiro documents here that there were officials within government who did appreciate the gathering threat, and were trying to sound some alarms. But he also clearly demonstrates that the progressive-left wing of the party were doing their best to trip them up.
Natch, that doesn't stop Shapiro from blaming Ashcroft as "the official responsible for the most dramatic failures of September 11th."
Breathtaking.
Shapiro was even opposed to the half-measures the Clinton administration was trying to take.
Is there any law enforcement measure against Al Qaeda Shapiro and his corunners on the American Left would have supported?

P.S. Here's another Shapiro laugh line: just after President Bush's first address to Congress after the Sept. 11th attacks, Shapiro argued, in demented cynicism, that the "real precedent" for the War on Terrorism was the war on drugs.

Facts also do not square well with the commission's alarming suggestion that, as commission advisor Jenkins puts it, "current efforts to detect, prevent and prepare for such attacks are inadequate..."

By attempting to set off a panic over external enemies, the National Commission on Terrorism is serving those inside-the-Beltway policy goals. But if it resonates with the press and public, it is because exaggerated fear of terrorism serves as a useful distraction from sweeping national anxiety over globalization and the growing power of transnational corporations.
