Ideological Diversity in the Media: Now We're Getting Somewhere!
The Christian Science Monitor runs an article expending on the recent Pew poll which found that the ideological persuasions of newsroom employees skews strongly to the left.
Gee, ya think???
I was also struck by these two passages:
Mmmkay...seems like they're putting an awful lot of faith into a fairly amorphous code. Show me an ethical idealogue and I'll show you an idealogue. Even if he or she's an unwitting one.
Look at it this way: If all the minorities in the newsrooms disappeared tomorrow, would coverage of minority communities suffer? Was coverage of minority communities adequate before newsrooms made a concerted effort to recruit journalists from those populations?
I don't think anyone familiar with journalism would argue that it was.
Obviously, a strong code of ethics is not sufficient to ensure that an all-white, straight, Protestant English-speaking only newsroom can adequately cover the black, latino, gay, or Jewish communities.
It's not a matter of ethics--he wouldn't even know what the issues were in the first place to apply them.
And journalism as a whole has embraced efforts to enhance diversity in the newsroom BECAUSE it improves coverage.
And yet these same people are now arguing that J-School ethics are an adequate substitute for ideological and regional diversity? Puh-leese.
Are professional ethics sufficient? Are they doing the job? Are they steering TV news stations and newspapers down the middle?
No. From the CS Monitor:
That's 45% to 14%. More than three times more Americans believe that news media are too liberal than conservative. This isn't just something statistically significant. This is a huge thumb in the eye of the country's newsrooms. This is an overwhelming finding.
Now, that finding will change depending on what stories are leading the news at the time of the survey. But it's not going to change that much.
If the much vaunted 'professional ethics' were sufficient to ensure adequate and balanced and representative news coverage, then we'd expect the two ends of the barbell to be roughly equal. The wackos on the right would never be happy, the moonbats on the left would not be happy.
Well, news flash: right wing wackos do NOT constitute 45% of the population. Indeed, that 45% is going to comprise a good number of independent voters.

I've been in the business 25 years and have never seen or heard evidence, even anecdotal, that reporters and editors are hired on the basis of ideology. I don't want to see that change.
Casting about for different sources of reporters -- the military, Christian colleges -- might have some impact on the ideological makeup of newsrooms, but I wouldn't count on it. In a country where people are free to choose whatever career they wish, it's hardly surprising that like-minded people wind up in the same professions regardless of personal backgrounds. How much political and ideological diversity is there among, say, bankers or petroleum engineers or trial lawyers? My guess is that the things that draw them to those professions are more important than their geographical and religious histories.

Sadly, it is not possible for a conservative to get into journalism without hypocracy. The journalims schools in this country are run by people who view Republicans with distaste and conservatives with horror. A journalism student showing any diviation from the liberal religion will find himself writing obituaries or covering social events. Without a degee, it is impossible to break into serious journalism and the faculty of every major journalism school in this country is going to make sure that no rightist ever graduates with a gpa above c.
The system is self policing. Liberals in education only talk to liberals in journalism and vice versa. Ideas are reinforced. Dissent is seen as error and eventually as either heresy or stupidity.
You cannot promote an exchange of ideas if you do not talk to people who's view differ from your own. Elite journalists are trained from college onward to dismiss anything right of center as ignorant at best and eveil at worst. Since they will not listen, they will continue to loose readers and viewers. Preaching to the choir demands that there be a choir to preach to. And the singers are runnin from the church.

Anonymous, I think you're just wrong. Besides working in newspapers (with no journalism degree) for a quarter of a century, I have taught journalism courses at several colleges. While I agree that journalists lean left of center more often than right, I have known journalists of all political persuasions, from libertarian to Republican to all-but-socialist. Indeed, the single most promising journalism student I can recall was profoundly conservative -- and was working for a national magazine within a couple of years.
I have often heard people make the claims you make, but have yet to hear of a single example of a qualified journalist who couldn't get through college or get work because of political beliefs. If you know of one, please pass it along. If you are the example, then you might want to run spell check first. Poor spelling thwarts far more journalism careers than politics does.

That's a rather convienient challenge for you to make. After all, if they couldn't get through college or get work, then its rather difficult to argue that they are 'qualified', now isn't it? What kind of evidence were you expecting? Good grades, when part of the question is weather political beliefs affect grades? Published articles from a guy who didn't get hired at a visible newspaper? Awfully hard to produce, if you aren't hired in the first place.
Your argument is equivalant to Southern whites assuming during the 1960's that blacks didn't have the same drive as whites. After all, where were all the southern black doctors and C.E.O.'s back then, hmmm?

I just visited your blog. I am collecting information to see where I can improve my traffic and my own blogs and websites. When I do a search, I use the the following keywords: drive traffic to my web site to locate the best information resources out there related to the theme of my marketing research. Then I personally visit the blogs that stand out. Yours was one of them.
