All Right You Bastards! I'm Calling You Out!
To: the editors of almost every news report I've seen who quote General Mattis saying "I don't have to apologize for the conduct of my men."
As exhibit A, I present to you a verbatim transcript of the press conference in question.
As exhibit B, I further note the pertinent part of the conference:
As you can plainly see, General Mattis clearly shifted his point of reference from the site of the so-called 'wedding party' to Fallujah. When he said he did not have to apologize for the conduct of his Marines, he was contrasting his own Marines' tactics with those of the insurgents, who make a common practice of hiding behind women and children.
Contrast this with these accounts:
The Globe and Mail: "Bad things happen in wars," said Major-General James Mattis, the U.S. Marine commander in charge of occupation forces in western Iraq.
"These were more than two dozen military-age males. I don't have to apologize for the conduct of my men."
That's right, they blow the quote, they take the last sentence out of the Fallujah context and mix it in with the "wedding," and they don't bother with the ellipses normally expected of a journalist when he omits portion of the text of remarks.
From the UK Guardian:
Again, no ellipsis. They quote Mattis as saying he has not seen the pictures but in the transcript he says he had. And again, the last sentence is removed from its original context and placed in with the wedding stuff.
The New York Times:
Again, the decontextualization from Fallujah. And I'm still looking for "bad things happen in wars" in the transcript.
Reuters:
Again, Reuters seems to invent "bad things happen in wars," skips the expected ellipses, and distorts the context of Mattis's assertion that he does not have to apologize for the conduct of his Marines. (Why are so many outlets distorting the exact same way? Are they not doing their own reporting, perchance?)
Agents France-Presse:
In this case, AFP quotes Mattis as saying the enemy owes the world an apology. But bizarrely, they say he was referring to the Nick Berg beheading--NOT the alleged wedding party. Look over the transcript. There's no mention of the Berg beheading anywhere.
The Independent engages in perhaps the most egregious distortion of all:
Ummm, there's nothing "cryptic" about the General's comment to someone actually familiar with the source material, putz.
The Washington Post, to its credit, gets it right.
For the most part, though, the news outlets are committing the same sins: distorting the general's meaning by omission, by skipping the ellipses (in the same places), and by making the same mistakes.
Essentially, it looks like they're quoting each other, or some apocryphal Q source material. They're not quoting General Mattis. They didn't even show up at the press conference, and they didn't bother to get a transcript or listen to the tape. But all these reporters are passing their crap off as if they were right from the source material.
Absolutely, completely pathetic.
If this is what passes for news coverage, then they ought to fire their reporters and hire some boy scouts to write for them. At least they'll be honest.
Asshats.

As exhibit A, I present to you a verbatim transcript of the press conference in question.
As exhibit B, I further note the pertinent part of the conference:
Unnamed Reporter: What happened yesterday at 3 a.m. in Al Qaim? Was there a wedding on? A wedding celebration?
Gen. Mattis: You joined us a little late, as I said to the young lady here, I said how many people how many people go to the desert 10 miles from the Syrian border and hold a wedding 80 miles from the nearest civilization? Over two-dozen military-aged males... let's not be naïve. Let's leave it at that.
(Question unintelligible)
Gen. Mattis: I can't...I've seen the pictures, but I can't...bad things happened. Generally...in Fallujah, I never saw a Marine hide behind a woman or a child or hold them in their house and fire out of the building. I don't have to apologize for the conduct of my Marines.

That's right, they blow the quote, they take the last sentence out of the Fallujah context and mix it in with the "wedding," and they don't bother with the ellipses normally expected of a journalist when he omits portion of the text of remarks.
From the UK Guardian:
Major General James Mattis, commander of the 1st Marine Division, was scathing of those who suggested a wedding party had been hit. "How many people go to the middle of the desert ... to hold a wedding 80 miles (130km) from the nearest civilization? These were more than two dozen military-age males. Let's not be naive."
When reporters asked him about footage on Arabic television of a child's body being lowered into a grave, he replied: "I have not seen the pictures but bad things happen in wars. I don't have to apologize for the conduct of my men."
Again, no ellipsis. They quote Mattis as saying he has not seen the pictures but in the transcript he says he had. And again, the last sentence is removed from its original context and placed in with the wedding stuff.
The New York Times:
Maj. Gen. James Mattis, the commander of the First Marine Division responsible for the remote stretch of desert where the strike was carried out, asked, "How many people go to the middle of the desert 10 miles from the Syrian border to hold a wedding 80 miles from the nearest civilization?"
At a news conference in Falluja, west of Baghdad, he said that two dozen men of military age were among those killed.
"Let's not be naive," he said. "Bad things happen in wars."
"I don't have to apologize for the conduct of my men," he added.
Again, the decontextualization from Fallujah. And I'm still looking for "bad things happen in wars" in the transcript.
Reuters:
"How many people go to the middle of the desert 10 miles from the Syrian border to hold a wedding 80 miles from the nearest civilization?" Mattis said in Falluja.

Asked about the footage, Mattis said: "I have not seen the pictures, but bad things happen in war."

The Independent engages in perhaps the most egregious distortion of all:
"These were more than two dozen military-age males. Let's not be naive," Major General James Mattis, commander of the US 1st Marine Division, said. But he had no explanation of where the dead women and children in the video came from. "I have not seen the pictures but bad things happen in wars," he said cryptically. "I don't have to apologise for the conduct of my men."
Ummm, there's nothing "cryptic" about the General's comment to someone actually familiar with the source material, putz.
The Washington Post, to its credit, gets it right.

'but once you're quoted "on the record," we can use those quotes any way we please.'
True enough, but you can't do it and keep your reputation for honesty.

Peter, sure an individual can use quotes any way that individual wants to. But to do so under the guise of journalistic accuracy and objectivity....?? Nope, my good man, sorry.
Sorry, Mr. Fallow, but you're incorrect. Please review Journalism's Code of Ethics and try again: http://www.spj.org/ethics_code.asp

I'm from Canada and I'm disgusted with what the Globe and Mail reported. I've just fired a letter to the editor about this and also alerted their competitor as well in the hopes that the Globe and Mail will answer these charges.
I think Mr Fallow is having you all on. A visit to his website demonstrates what I can only surmise he thinks is elevated irony. Perhaps the fact that we didn't see it right away is more attributable to the pervasiveness of the phenomenon of bias in the fourth estate

Wow. I have comments! I've never seen them before. (I almost never go to the homepage, much less the archive links.)
Thanks a bunch for writing. Especially the journalists.
I have to say the "Jason please my good man first comment" really cracked me up.
All the best,
Jason
P.S., The public editor's office at the New York Times just dropped me a note saying they're looking into it, so stay tuned.

but does this suprise anyone? we've all known for many many months now that the media doesn't care about reporting the truth. they only want to make Bush and his people look bad. it goes along with the lines of Bushes plans for Iraq, although he clearly stated them yesterday, there are those in the media that still insist that he doesn't have a plan. the Librials are the death of the nation.

To "jeff" the journalist - you must be terribly naive. Surely you don't believe in the "objectivity" and "accuracy" of the media? There are so many clear examples of stories being passed around as "true" because "reporters" don't bother to do their own fact checking any more. One of the clearest examples is the story about sublimal messages in the smoke in "Lion King", a story that went worldwide but was found, over a year later, to be fabricated based upon the opinion of one woman in Tennessee.
There is not such thing any more as journalists. Nowadays what we have is repeating terminals. Someone writes something partly based on fact but slanted to portray their particular view of events, and then all the other media outlets simply regurgitate the story.
"Journalists" now routinely interview other "journalists" to "get the story", rather than interviewing eye witnesses or actually visiting the scene of an event and getting the facts about what took place. Or they interview and "expert", who lives half way around the world and is basing their entire opinion upon the "facts" that were "reported. And it's all supposed to be "fair and objective".
The Internet may be the death of journalism, because now interested readers can get their "news" directly from the people involved - not filtered through the prism of a "reporter".

Have you listened to the actual source tape? With so many outlets reporting the same quote that's not in the transcript, I would question the transcript's accuracy. Transcriptionists do make mistakes, especially rushed ones, and the National Review is not necessarily any more trustworthy than other media outlets.

Excellent work, Jason. I live in the U.K, and the Independent and Guardian are two of the four national broadsheets available over here. Both are total rubbish as far as I'm concerned. I knew this probably decades before you did. The London Times though is pretty good and has to rival the Washington Post for accuracy and objectivity. Check it out some time.

21) "I don't want to alarm everybody that, you know, New Orleans is filling up like a bowl. That's just not happening." -Bill Lokey, FEMA's New Orleans coordinator, in a press briefing from Baton Rouge, Aug. 30, 2005 (Source)
22) "FEMA is not going to hesitate at all in this storm. We are not going to sit back and make this a bureaucratic process. We are going to move fast, we are going to move quick, and we are going to do whatever it takes to help disaster victims." --FEMA Director Michael Brown, Aug. 28, 2005 (Source)
23) "I don't make judgments about why people chose not to leave but, you know, there was a mandatory evacuation of New Orleans." –FEMA Director Michael Brown, arguing that the victims bear some responsibility, CNN interview, Sept. 1, 2005 (Source)
24) "I understand there are 10,000 people dead. It's terrible. It's tragic. But in a democracy of 300 million people, over years and years and years, these things happen." --GOP strategist Jack Burkman, on MSNBC's "Connected," Sept. 7, 2005 (Source)
25) "Thank President Clinton and former President Bush for their strong statements of support and comfort today. I thank all the leaders that are coming to Louisiana, and Mississippi and Alabama to our help and rescue. We are grateful for the military assets that are being brought to bear. I want to thank Senator Frist and Senator Reid for their extraordinary efforts. Anderson, tonight, I don't know if you've heard – maybe you all have announced it -- but Congress is going to an unprecedented session to pass a $10 billion supplemental bill tonight to keep FEMA and the Red Cross up and operating." –Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA), to CNN's Anderson Cooper, Aug. 31, 2005, to which Cooper responded:
"I haven't heard that, because, for the last four days, I've been seeing dead bodies in the streets here in Mississippi. And to listen to politicians thanking each other and complimenting each other, you know, I got to tell you, there are a lot of people here who are very upset, and very angry, and very frustrated. And when they hear politicians slap – you know, thanking one another, it just, you know, it kind of cuts them the wrong way right now, because literally there was a body on the streets of this town yesterday being eaten by rats because this woman had been laying in the street for 48 hours. And there's not enough facilities to take her up. Do you get the anger that is out here?" (Source)

"But I really didn't hear that at all today. People came up to me all day long and said 'God bless your son,' people of different races and it was very, very moving and touching, and they felt like when he flew over that it made all the difference in their lives, so I just don't hear that." –Former First Lady Barbara Bush to CNN's Larry King, after King asked her how she felt when people said that her son "doesn't care" about race, Sept. 5, 2005 (Source)

"As of Saturday (Sept. 3), Blanco still had not declared a state of emergency, the senior Bush official said." –Washington Post staff writers Manuel Roig-Franzia and Spencer Hsu, who didn't bother to fact-check the blatant lie peddled by the Bush administration as part of its attempts to pin blame on state and local officials, when, in fact, the emergency declaration had been made on Friday, Aug. 26 (Source)

I have seen a lot about home internet based business opportunity.
See how a 33 yr old ex-bouncer replaced his income and learned even more about home internet based business opportunity
Seriously, It only took about nine months. There is a lot of hype out there about home internet based business opportunity so don't get overwhelmed.
It's real though. A sixty year old industry that does $100 Billion a year in sales. Isn't that worth ten minutes of your time?

STOP FORECLOSURE WITH CALIFORNIALOANRATE.COM
CaliforniaLoanRate.com will work with you to develop a plan that best serves your particular needs. We will then negotiate with your lender to incorporate any changes that are needed to make the plan acceptable both to you and to your lender. Keeping you in your home is advantageous to the lender. Our job is to help them appreciate that advantage.
SHORT SALES MAY SELL YOU SHORT
You may have been told that a short sale is your only course of action. What you may not have been told is that you may be dealing with the consequences of that action for many years.
DEADLINE SENSITIVITY
We understand that you may be facing immediate deadlines and that any delay can mean a loss of meaningful options for relief.
TYPICAL RESTRUCTURING PLANS
Restructuring plans may include:
Adding delinquent payments and any foreclosure fees to the back end of the loan. This may include a permanent reduction in your interest rate.
Forbearance plans may be used to temporarily halt the foreclosure process for up to four years while you make payments to become current with the lender.
GOALS OF NEGOTIATION WITH YOUR LENDER
In our negotiations with your lender we are seeking to lower your payments, lower the interest rate, mitigate any negative impact on your credit rating, and keep your home from going into foreclosure. The lender benefits by continuing to receive payments on the mortgage, and saving on the costs that would be incurred in a foreclosure.
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
We will need to document your income and expenses for the last two years. Documentation will include pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements and property tax bills, and all of the paperwork associated with your mortgage. We will need copies of your bills to document your financial situation and the factors that led to your falling behind. Please provide any other letters or notices that demonstrate that you faced a reduction in your income or higher than expected expenses.
TELLING YOUR STORY
We will ask you to prepare a draft letter that explains in your own words what factors have led to your need for a modification from the lender. It is important that you author this letter, and that it is not generic. Please include the details that bring to life the financial difficulties that you have faced. If you feel that you were not properly and fully informed regarding the terms of your loan, please describe the process by which you came to sign the loan papers and what your understanding of the terms of your loan was at that time.

Singer, songwriter. Jackson was born August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, to an African-American working-class family. His father, Joseph Jackson, had been a guitarist but had put aside his musical aspirations to provide for his family as a crane operator. The US media is constantly after the US Military. A real shame when they should be supporting our troops, not revealing classified information and putting them in danger
People have used the idea of "social network" loosely for over a century to connote complex sets of relationships between members of social systems at all scales, from interpersonal to international
Glorious info here. This attention-grabbing put up made me smile. Maybe for those who throw in a couple of pictures it’s going to make the whole thing more interesting. Anyway, in my language, there are usually not a lot good supply like this.
