Ding Dong!
Al-Douri's dead!

The Ba'ath party announced that "The leader of the resistance... died on 11 November, at 0220. The BBC says there's no independent confirmation."

If true, it's fantastic news. We've been trying to get our hands on him for a long time. It would have been better to take him down ourselves, along with his personal papers and supplies of cash.

It is possible that this is just a ruse to get us off his tail. It's also possible that his assets will go to family members who are just as committed to the insurgency, but I think both scenarios are unlikely. You can't replace an al-Douri, who was clever, wise, and as evil as they come.

He's the guy who invited al Zawahiri, the number 2 man in Al Qaeda, to a Muslim solidarity summit in Iraq in 1999. He also taunted the Iraqi Kurds, saying to them "If you have forgotten Halabjah, we are ready to repeat the operation."

Sorry I didn't get a chance to put a bullet in this bastard myself.

Splash, out
