Schroeder: Classless to the very end
Outgoing election loser and former Chancellor of Germany Gerhardt Schroeder, whose country has an unemployment rate of 9.3%, (This BBC report pegs it at 11.6%) took the opportunity of his final speech in office to lambaste the economic policies of the U.S. and Britain, claiming they "have no chance in Europe."

Schroeder also had the gall to criticize the U.S. response to Hurricane Katrina:
In an apparent reference to Hurricane Katrina, Schroeder castigated Washington for liberal, hands-off policies that left it exposed in times of crisis. The Bush administration was widely criticised for its response to the devastating storm.

"I do not want to name any catastrophes where you can see what happens if organised state action is absent. I could name countries, but the position I still hold forbids it, but everyone knows I mean America," he said to loud applause.

The Katrina death toll, last I looked, was 1,003 people.

Gerhardt Schroeder's lack of organized state action let 7,000 of his people die in a heat wave in 2003.

Auf wiedersehen, Schroeder.

Perhaps you'll find your calling touching Dieter's monkey.Splash, out

Schrodes,

My squad did your mother behind the railhead club in Graf. You look just like the ammo bearer.

Wow,
I never really liked Schroeder and his policies, but neither would I have lumped him into the category of 'jackass' either. Until now.

For a world leader, it must be sad when in a farewell address, there's so little good to say about your accomplishments and your own country that you have to resort to cheap shots against an ally. Especially when those same cheap shots are just as easily reversed, as you have been quick to note Jason. Good post.

It would be such an easy question to ask and sell an awful lot of papers...

"Adjusting for country size, the FRG heat wave deaths would have been about 25,000 in the US. Considering that the recent US hurricane Katrina with all the problems in disaster response killed slightly more than 1,000 what does this say about the comparative effectiveness of the two governments and who should be taking lessons from whom? Is our national government studying to do better or offering lessons?"

So why isn't anybody taking the easy, and profitable, road?
