Jeez. If State and local officials aren't good for that, then what the hell ARE they good for?
The updated Louisiana death toll was released as Gov. Kathleen Blanco lashed out at the federal government, accusing it of moving too slowly in recovering the bodies. The dead "deserve more respect than they have received," she said.
However, Federal Emergency Management Agency spokesman David Passey said the state asked to take over body recovery last week. "The collection of bodies is not normally a FEMA responsibility," he said.

Do you really want me to tell you what they're good for?
Okay, crying hysterically and cussing out the federal government.

Your apology above is noted, and probably warranted. Nevertheless, the underlying point is solid. Which body is more likely to show respect for the remains of the victims, the much-maligned federal beurocracy, or the surviving friends and neighbors of the deceased?
