Court oks wife beating by AP Reporter Michael Sniffen
Check out this story, headlined "torture may be used to detain US enemies."

WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. military panels reviewing the detention of foreigners as enemy combatants are allowed to use evidence gained by torture in deciding whether to keep them imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the government conceded in court Thursday.

The acknowledgment by Principal Deputy Associate Attorney General Brian Boyle came during a U.S. District Court hearing on lawsuits brought by some of the 550 foreigners imprisoned at the U.S. naval base in Cuba. The lawsuits challenge their detention without charges for up to three years so far.

Attorneys for the prisoners argued that some were held solely on evidence gained by torture, which they said violated fundamental fairness and U.S. due process standards. But Boyle argued in a similar hearing Wednesday that the detainees "have no constitutional rights enforceable in this court."

You have to read ten whole paragraphs into the story to figure out that we're not talking about torture by U.S. personnel. The article doesn't spell it out, but some of these detainees were captured on information gleaned via torture at the hands of other countries' agencies.

The reporter, helpfully, doesn't bother mentioning who those countries are. But Jordan has been an enthusiastic practicioner.

But the specific torture tactics this reporter implies at Guantanamo seem to be limited to a female interrogator removing her blouse (umm, does he really mean a t-shirt, since the BDU blouse is an overgarment?)

The reporter and headline writer seem to have carefully crafted this article to shed the most negative imaginable light on the U.S.

I say "seems to," because the article strikes me as more incompetent than subversive.

Put simply, this article sucks.

For example, what the f--k's the "acknowledgement" in paragraph two?

Oh, by the way. Nobody's suggesting that Michael Sniffen beats his wife.

See how it feels, Mike, to have to read to the end of the story to get the most important information?

Splash, out

Um, I'd like some of that torture. She can interrogate me all she wants.
