A challenge...
to Andrew Sullivan, who's criticizing General Tommy Franks for saying we had enough troops for the mission, and to the small army of armchair generals who are kvetching at Rumsfeld and Franks for not deploying enough troops:

Where in the world do you think those troops would have come from?

From where? Who? How long could we have sustained it? What other commitments would we have had to shortchange? What's the evidence that more troops in 2003 would mean the necessity of a smaller force in 2005? Why would that conclusion follow?

Who are these idiots who think resources grow on trees?

I sure don't see many land warfare experts among them.

If having more boots on the ground in 2003 was the answer, who was the President who cut entire corps sized elements out of the Army that liberated Kuwait?

Splash, out

Comments:
I'm always surprised when the media, or anyone else, jumps on the "not enough troops" issue, and act like Franks never wrote a book.

Remember WW1 officers, lining soldiers up like always, and acting like machineguns were single shots? War changes. Franks just realized it before other head-up-their a-- generals (like the ones in every war who sent soldiers to die using outdated tactics made obsolete by technology).

Franks made artillery deadly by jury rigging (at his own expense)a communications system when other generals were happy to keep things the way they were. Technology. He wrote that speed can replace numbers of troops and have equal impact. Like surprise! We could stop our own entire Civil War period army (1860-1865), both sides, with the troops we have in Iraq and it would only take a week to get it done. For people so anxious to see progress there are quite a few who don't want to act like the future is here.

The war was planned day and night while Democrats were spouting lip service and apparently not meaning a thing they said. Even John Kerry was all for going after terrorists and said so, while Tommy Frank's men sweated details about a fight Kerry was promoting. If there was an error, it was due to lack of intelligence about almost everything. Of course there is never enough information when spies are removed (because it is immoral to spy) and because SOMEONE cut the budget for intelligence.

Information can win this war. More troops are just more targets right now. A smaller target is always harder to hit. Besides, lets save a few outfits for Syria.
