So the French are Corrupt...
...And their taking out their outrage on the Bush Administration.

HEADLINE: Report on Iraq Arms Angers France and Others

The Bush administration's handling this week of a report on Saddam Hussein's attempts to purchase weapons and buy influence has angered French officials and set back a year of American efforts to repair the rupture caused by the Iraq war, French and other European officials said Friday.

Now, how the Times can spin a story about rampant UN and French corruption into a "Bush is incompetent story" is beyond me. But the New York Times makes a game attempt.

Why aren't the French people furious about the corruption of their own officials? Why don't their political leaders take ownership of the problem and lead the effort to clean up their own house?

French officials say that the report's charges, based on documents and interviews in Iraq, have been denied in the past, but that Mr. Duelfer's report did not contain the denials. They also complain that France was not given more than one day's notice before the report was issued.

Sorry, charlie. France doesn't get to determine the production schedule of US Government publications.

The allegations of UN Oil For Food corruption are not new. Nor is suspicion of French involvement.

They were incensed that the report also mentioned Americans in connection with similar charges but that unlike the French they were not identified because of American privacy regulations.

"You protect American citizens, but you put in danger a number of private citizens in other countries who may be innocent people," said Jean-David Levitte, the French ambassador to the United States. "These names are from an old list, published months ago, and those mentioned denied it flatly."

Ok, so their names are already a matter of public record. Their denials, of course, are not relevant to the issue.

A European diplomat said the damage to French-American relations was so great that it could disrupt a new spirit of cooperation with France on other fronts, namely the joint American and European efforts to put pressure on Iran to dismantle its suspected nuclear weapons program and to organize an international conference next month on Iraq.

What an ass.

If it were a good idea in the first place for Europe to work jointly with the United States in order to stem nuclear weapons proliferation in Iran--and it is--then the fact that these scumbags would rather stick a thumb in Bush's eye then work for the stability and security of the world speaks volumes about their cynicism and spinelessness.

"This report does great damage," Mr. Levitte said

Non, Mr. Levitte. French intransigence did great damage. The report was just the latest in a long and lengthening line of documents pointing out the fact.

"There really is a sense of outrage in Paris."

Oh, when is there NOT a sense of outrage in Paris? Well, except when Jews die.

Anytime someone tells you about a "sense of outrage in Paris," remind them that Parisians we're talking about the same bunch of sheet-waving, self-centered, spoiled half-wits who rioted at the premier of "Rite of Spring."

Let's recap:

France: The French-Arab Friendship Association received 15.1 million barrels. Former French Interior Minister Charles Pasqua received 12 million barrels. [4] Patrick Maugein of the Trafigura company received 25 million barrels. Michel Grimard, founder of the French-Iraqi Export Club, received 17.1 million barrels.

Meanwhile, Chirac is working to mend the rift in Franco-American relations by badmouthing the US in Hanoi.

Sacrebleu!
