The Iraqi Nuke Program: An Insider Speaks Out
Christopher Hitchens juxtaposes the Duelfer report with a review of The Bomb in my Garden, a book written by one of Saddam's nuclear scientists, who makes a startling revelation:

The inspection regime had failed to uncover the existence of a ready-to-roll centrifuge for the enrichment of uranium, which the author - under the orders of Qusai Hussein - had buried in his back yard.

So it's true - and I hope he gave his address - there can be no doubt that Hussein did have a latent nuclear program, and he did have the means to produce enriched uranium.

We already know Saddam had at least two research reactors - IRT and Tammuz II - and had exploded at least three 'dirty bombs' in 1987.

The hope upon which the left relies - that the Ba'athist institutional memory concerning nuclear technologies had vanished in that period of time - is simply delusional.

There is no doubt whatsoever that Saddam's latent nuke program, together with his contacts with Al Qaeda, his known direct support of Hezbollah and Hamas, his repeated attempts to purchase missile technology from the North Koreans documented in the Kay report, and his documented willingness to use chemical weapons against Kurds and Iranians did combine to represent a grave and gathering danger.

One explanation for the absence of any nuclear stockpiles: according to the Green report cited above, dirty materials irradiated with the technology available to Saddam Hussein would have had a short half-life, and would have had to have been used right away.

There is no point, then, in stockpiling these 'dirty bomb' materials - Saddam would have had no alternative but to use 'just in time' inventory management. His dirty bombs would have had to have been made to order.

If Saddam had a centrifuge, then there is also no doubt that he could have ramped up production immediately after the inspectors left or the sanctions were lifted. Failing that, he could have sold his centrifuge to - well, anybody - in exchange for some of its product. The Ukraine comes to mind. As does Libya, the Sudan, any number of Southern and Central European countries. Or even Al Qaeda itself.

We further already know that Saddam's agents had had a series of contacts with Al Qaeda.

So John Kerry's brainless haranguing about "No WMDs have been found" is at once simple-minded, short-sighted, and a bald-faced lie.

Splash, out
