...To Lift And Drop A Question On Your Plate
Religious Red Zone's Kerry Jacoby has a question she'd like to see asked at the debates:

1.) Senator Kerry, you said in July that you believe that "life begins at conception." Yet you have a near-perfect record on opposing legislation that would reduce the availability of abortion, even partial-birth abortion. Can you assure pro-choice voters that you have so little core conviction that you will protect their interests as president? Or can you assure pro-life voters that you aren't just a lying weasel and you might entertain some of the same kinds of abortion-reducing legislation president Bush has signed?

Cute.

She has lots more.

I think she somewhat misrepresents the pro-choice position. It is perfectly possible--indeed, quite common, for someone to be absolutely convinced that life begins at conception, while simulaneously harboring the position that it is not the place for government to impose this view on those who do not themselves harbor it. Politically, this is a perfectly legitimate position.

But hey, if that position is morally, logically, and structurally untenable in and of itself, is that Jacoby's problem?

Splash, out

Comments:
JASON! You usually have very good points, and I agree with the great majority of what you say. But, did you hear what you said? You said that if someone believes life begins at conception, they shouldn’t attempt to prevent someone else from taking that life. Do you believe, for example, that if someone does not believe a black person is human (like many whites did in the days before the “equal rights movement”) we should not attempt to prevent that someone from taking a black person’s life? Even in the darkest days of segregation that was recognized as wrong by virtually everyone. If one believes a fetus is life, they cannot set that aside and allow someone (anyone) from taking that life. Only if one thinks there is nothing wrong with taking a life can they do this. And I think most of us will agree taking a life out of convenience is wrong. Most abortions are just that. Taking a life out of convenience.

I enjoy reading your site, and look forward to what you have to say. Keep your head about you.
